An excerpt from Borrowed

He'd been dreaming about the hallway light he'd promised to fix for four weekends running when something pulled him up out of sleep. Not a sound. More like an absence of sound. The particular silence a house develops when something inside it has changed.

He moved toward her room, not running, not yet allowing himself to run, because if he ran then he was admitting that something was wrong and he wasn't ready to do that yet.

Her door was open. He pushed it wider.

The bed was empty. Not slept-in empty. The blankets were pulled back as though someone had drawn them aside deliberately, carefully, the way you might prepare a bed for a guest. Charlotte's stuffed elephant — the gray one with the missing eye — sat in the center of the pillow watching him with its single glass stare.

Jason stood there for three seconds. Long enough for his chest to turn to concrete.

Then he was moving.

————————————

She was in the road.

Standing in the middle of it at 2:41 in the morning in her pale yellow pajamas, barefoot on the asphalt, absolutely still. Not the stillness of a child waiting. Not the stillness of a child listening. The stillness of a figure that has been placed.

Her head was turned toward the woods.

He reached her. Put his hand on her shoulder, felt the warmth of her through the thin cotton — she was here, she was solid, she was real — but she didn't respond. Her eyes were fixed on the treeline. The air smelled ionized, electric, the way it smells after lightning strikes somewhere very close.

He turned to look at the woods.

The light came from inside the trees. Not from above them — from within them — as if the forest had swallowed something luminous and was trying to hold it in. White-blue. Impossibly bright. It pulsed with a rhythm that was slow and patient, like a heartbeat.

It lasted perhaps two seconds.

When it went out, he turned to Charlotte—

She wasn't there.

"Charlotte." A whisper. All he had left.

Nothing answered.

M.B. Lukash isn’t your traditional author. He didn’t set out to write books—he spent years building a career in high-stakes, real-world environments—but storytelling was always there, waiting.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, he was shaped by a steady diet of sci-fi, horror, thrillers, and mystery—the kind of stories that didn’t just entertain, but lingered. The kind that made you question what you thought you understood about reality.

That curiosity never left.

His writing lives in that same space—somewhere between grounded and unsettling.

His stories follow flawed, human characters forced into situations they can’t fully explain, where logic starts to break down and the truth is never clean.

There’s always a question beneath the surface: what if the thing you can’t explain… is real?

Lukash brings a pragmatic, methodical lens to his work—paired with a willingness to push into the unknown. The result is fiction that feels both believable and deeply unsettling.

He writes to explore. To question. And maybe, in some small way, to leave a mark.
